This time last year....(Pt. 2 Diagnosis)

This time last year Isaac was still in the hospital..He went in and was diagnosed on 12-27-2010. We would end up staying there until 1-4-2011.

Mamaw "playing" Dr. with Isaac-to help pass the time..At first, they talked like we would only be in the hospital 2 or 3 days...
The nurse that did our diabetes education with us and a wonderfully talented clown that came by to visit and Isaac's cousin Sarah.
 Breakfast..
Isaac with his dad looking at a book. The hospital has a childrens area with crafts, books, toys and a play room with wii, games etc.
 Isaac resting.

This is where I slept everynight in the hospital with Isaac. Thankful to my family/husband who kept me supplied with clothes/etc. and took care of Jacob and Abram while not at the hospital..because I never left. I wasn't going home without him :)
Isaac drawing..We tried to find lots of things to help keep him occupied, Nine days in the hospital is a loooong time. We would also take walks.
The boys making a "ride" out of the hospital bed. The beds had to be exchanged twice as soon as we got to his room from the ER because they did not work!! Finally glad to get one with all the bells/whistles...ha

I will post a few pictures later of our last few days in the hospital. Lord willing.

Happy New Year friends.. Hope this year brings a cure for Type 1 Diabetes!!!!!!!

Scenes from a winter's walk to the mailbox :)

Tree line against the sky.
A ripe holly tree. The birds stay around these alot in the winter.
Sun shining through the trees.
Leafless trees against the sky.
Cows munching on fresh delivered hay.
A lone chicken..
Chickens "scratching" for insects.
Creek :)

The warmer than normal weather here has some of the trees blooming again. This time last year there was 18 inches of snow on the ground and the local schools had only went to school four days in December!
I enjoyed my walk to the mailbox today testing out my new camera. LOL
Blessed walk and blessed by God. Thank you Lord for your blessings on me.

Type 1 Diabetes Medical Supplies

This is a dresser that we keep some of Isaac's diabetes medical supplies in.

The first drawer contains his lancets, test strips and glucagon.

The second drawer contains his glucose tablets, alcohol swabs, an extra thermometer, keytone urine test strips, a few syringes and blood keytone test strips

The third drawer contains his dexcom seven continous glucose monitor supplies and numbing cream.

The fourth drawer contains his omnipod insulin pumps, extra batteries and a few supplies that he uses with those.
The fifth drawer contains the past years paper work on filled prescriptions and medical test, extra log books, extra glucometers, tape, etc.

Some medical supply artwork on top of the dresser.
In the top of a closet we keep syringes, blood pressure monitor and a few other supplies.
His novolog insulin and lantus insulin are kept in the butter compartment of our refrigerator.

We also keep his glucose gel and nausea med. in the refrigerator.

Insulin is not a cure. Without insulin Isaac would die. Please help support finding a cure for this disease.

Isaac's 1st Diaversary

Isaac decorating his cake..He wanted it to say Survivor :)
A few things that we got for him.. some diet Dr. Enuf's, a balloon and a couple of gifts.(wrapped in camo wrapping paper of course..lol)
My sister and her family gave him a little dog tag with a personal engraving.(To clip onto his ballbag, etc.)
A new shirt for basketball practice.
Another Shirt.
A new book of Bible stories.

Isaac said that he wanted to celebrate his d-day. So that is what we did. We went out and had lunch. Went to the mall and other local stores. Made a cake (and had ice cream). Had family over, rented The Smurf's  and Kung Fu Panda 2.
Thank you Lord for saving Isaac's life a year ago 12-27-2010 (Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis day) and for being with us through this year.
Thank you for always being here for us.

Diagnosis Day 12-27-2010 (Pt. 1 Diagnosis)

I'm sure that lots of you recognize "that" look.
For a few days before Christmas Isaac was starting to have symptoms of type one diabetes. A few times he had wet the bed..Which had never happened before. On Christmas Eve I noticed in a picture how small his arms looked in a picture of him making Christmas cookies..Then I also noticed how thin his face and rest of his body was looking..He has always been lean and very athletic. But this was different. I thought maybe he was having a big growth spurt causing the bed wetting-he had also been bear hunting for several weeks in which he hiked for hours and double digit miles back in the mountains-explaning his weight loss(and getting taller/looking slimmer-.back to the
growth spurt idea)..In about 2-3 days he had lost alot of weight. He had complained of chest pain at our Church Christmas play and a few other times. Christmas Night he also started to drink more and urinate more in the night. The last two symtoms hit the morning when were going to the Dr. The morning we got up to go to the Dr.s office he came back out of the bathroom and said he could hardly walk across the floor...(Again, something he has never complained of..fatigue) He has never been a complainer..
Then he sat on the couch and starting throwing up..that morning is when it hit me how seriously ill he was and could not get to the hospital fast enough..(I had been looking up the symptoms on the internet)

There was 18 inches of snow on the ground that morning. We had an appt. scheduled with our pediatrician. He told us to go on to the hospital , that his office would not be opening until one that day because of the snow. So we headed to the Niswonger Childrens Hospital apx. 45 minutes away.

Within about 10 minutes at the childrens hospital ER we found out he had type 1 diabetes and was in DKA(diabetic ketoacidosis-which can kill). They said the reason he had not shown symptom's earlier was because of the good physical shape he was in (very active) and his healthy diet. They figure he had been sick awhile. His A1C was over 13. His blood sugar at diagnosis was close to 500. (His A1C is down to 6.7 now)
I knew diabetes was a very real possibility with his symptoms..Which had only been showing for a few days. It was still shocking to "hear" the diagnosis......
In our room...that we would end up staying in for nine days.

His first meal they sent up after diagnosis. (With mamaw)

IV's in both arms..We were almost sent to the PICU to be put on an insulin drip.
They had to keep uping his insulin dramatically over the next several days. Our local children
hospital has no Pediatric Endocrinologist so the doctor's there kept in touch with East Tn. Childrens Hospital which is over 2 hours away from us..That is where we go to now for our quarterly check ups.
He decided that he wants to "celebrate" his diaversary.(Diagnosis day) So that is what we are going to do.
Thank you Lord for bringing us this far. And for always being there for/with us.
God is so good.
My son is a fighter/survivor.
One year later!
Praying for a cure.

Matching Dexcom CGM/Omnipod PDM Blood Glucose Numbers :)

                    What a pretty picture..
USUALLY our dexcom cgm and omnipod pdm do not have matching numbers...I am thankful that our new dexcom is usually much closer to our our fingerstick bg's than the last one :) Hopefully the newer generation continous glucose monitors and blood glucose meters will be more accurate...
